China's Tainted Milk Sickens 13,000 Children

Remember the Chinese pet food scandal of 2007 in which thousands of pets died as a result of tainted ingredients used in scores of pet brands sold in the USA, Canada and elsewhere? How about the tained Chinese toothpaste sold in South America that contained toxins?

I've been warning Apple Juice drinkers in the USA of the dangers of consuming products that contain food ingredients from China. Now almost 13,000 children have been sickened by melamine-tainted milk products in China. Some 40,000 other infants and young children have received outpatient medical treatment and consultation as a result of the tainted milk, China's Xinhua new agency reported on Sunday. 1,253 infants have been diagnosed with kidney stones as a result of drinking formula laced with melamine.  53 are in critical condition, and two have even died from the bad formula, which was distributed by Sanlu Dairy.

Among the companies whose milk products are produced in China are Nestle (Dairy Farm Pure Milk). Imagine you're a mother feeding a child poisoned milk?  Traces of melamine have been found in yogurt and ice cream from 22 Chinese dairy providers.

According to CNN, melamine is commonly used in coatings and laminates, wood adhesives, fabric coatings, ceiling tiles and flame retardants. Melamine can be added to various products to give them the chemical appearance of higher nutritional content.

My problem with China is that its food industry is unregulated or under-regulated compared with U.S. standards. Why, then, are most American manufacturers of apple juice using Chinese produced apple concentrate? My posts on this critically important issue have been mentioned and reposted by the Dallas Morning News and others.
